Cold brew, the smoothest and most addictive cold coffee, bursts onto the coffee scene as an alternative to the acidity of traditional iced coffee. Unlike its counterpart, cold brew is prepared by steeping for 12 to 24 hours in room-temperature water, a method that highlights its sweet and fruity notes without the need for sugar.
Cold Brew Recipe
Making it at home is surprisingly simple. According to experts, the key lies in the ratio: a 1:10 ratio (100 g of coffee per liter of water) is ideal for a balanced result. It is recommended to use medium or light roast beans to enhance the flavors. Brands such as Cafés Jayza suggest varieties like Colombia Supremo, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, or Papua New Guinea Sigri AA; I mention these origins because they will be easier for you to find at any coffee roaster.
The preparation does not require specialized equipment, although tools like the Hario Mizudashi or a French press can simplify the process. Beyond its flavor, the benefits of cold brew are notable: its low acidity makes it gentler on the stomach, and its versatility allows you to adjust the caffeine intensity, offering total control over the drinking experience. A coffee that, beyond being a simple beverage, presents itself as a meticulous and pleasurable ritual.
How Do I Make Cold Brew?
- In a wide bowl, I pour in 100 ml of water and 100 grams of ground coffee (weigh it with a scale and don’t pay attention to the measurements shown on scoops, there can be quite a difference), and I stir it a few times to mix everything well. I do it this way so I can pour the coffee mixture into the bottle without difficulty. I used to add the ground coffee directly to the bottle, and it was a mess.
- I pour the mixture into the bottle using a funnel.
- I add the remaining 900 ml of water to the bottle, stir it a little, and put it in the fridge for at least 24 hours. I keep experimenting; other times I have left it for 48 hours to see if I can bring out more nuances.
That’s all there is to it—enjoy your coffee wherever you go.
Until next time, Coffee Lovers.
